About Summa School

Education designed for greater possibilities.

The name Summa School is inspired by summa cum laude, “with highest distinction.” It reflects a simple belief at the heart of our work: every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their highest potential.
Summa School is an education company that designs practical, research-informed systems, resources, and learning experiences for children and the adults who support them.

Our work spans early literacy, instructional practice, student development, professional learning, educational resources, books, and music. From helping a parent strengthen a young reader at home to equipping educators with tools for stronger instruction, each Summa School offering is designed to turn sound educational thinking into practical action.

Rather than creating one-size-fits-all solutions, we look closely at the challenges that can stand between children and successful learning, and design thoughtful ways to address them.

What We Do
Through Summa School, we:

  • Support families with literacy education, reading support, and practical tools for helping children thrive.

  • Equip educators with professional learning, instructional frameworks, coaching, and classroom resources.

  • Partner with schools to strengthen teaching, learning, and implementation.

  • Design educational systems and programs that make complex ideas practical and usable.

  • Create books, music, and learning resources that help children learn in engaging and memorable ways.

Across every area of our work, the goal remains the same:

Equip. Empower. Elevate.

Meet the Founder

Kathy Smith
Founder & Educational Systems Designer

Kathy Smith is an educator, author, consultant, and Educational Systems Designer with nearly two decades of experience in elementary and early childhood education.

Her career has included work as a classroom teacher, literacy specialist, professional learning facilitator, and education consultant supporting teachers and schools. Across those roles, one question has consistently shaped her work:

How can we make what we know about teaching and learning more practical for the people responsible for helping children succeed?

That question eventually became part of the foundation for Summa School.

Kathy combines classroom experience, educational research, creativity, and systems thinking to develop approaches that help educators and families move from knowing what matters to knowing what to do next.

She is the creator of educational frameworks and programs including the R.E.A.D.Y. Framework, Reading Rx, STAMINA, and other Summa School initiatives, as well as the author of numerous children's books and educational resources. Her work reflects a particular interest in early literacy, instructional decision-making, student development, and designing learning experiences that are both effective and engaging.

Today, Kathy is building Summa School as a home for that work, and as an organization committed to creating educational solutions that can make a meaningful difference for children, families, educators, and schools.

A Note from Kathy

“I believe some of the most powerful changes in education happen when we equip the people closest to children with the right knowledge, tools, and confidence. My goal with Summa School is to design resources and systems that make excellent educational practice easier to understand, easier to use, and ultimately more impactful for children.”
